My Boy Talks With His Hands

And eats his toes, too
Yesterday morning, we were all sitting at the kitchen table, eating breakfast and reading the newspaper. Franklin started to fuss…and fuss. “Are you getting hungry?” I asked, “Do you want to nurse?” along with the accompanying sign language. He stopped fussing and began opening and closing his hand, clearly making the sign for “nurse.” I’ve never pushed my plate of pancakes aside faster than I did at that moment.
He signed again in the afternoon, and as I was nursing him this morning. Dane has been signing “nurse” to Franklin as he hands him over to me since his very first day of life. I’ve been signing with him consistently for the past couple of months, and have noticed a look of recognition in his face in the recent weeks.
Call me crazy, but this is way more exciting that him army crawling his way down the hall this morning!

Signing with Andrew was the smartest thing I’ve done as a parent. I can not count the number of frustrated tantrums I avoided by knowing exactly what he wanted before he could “tell” me. And a happy baby is a happy mommy.
